The Snow Queen
The Snow Queen was first produced as a Soviet animated film in 1957, but re-released in the United States in 1959. It is based on the story created by Hans Christian Andersen. One of the original Christmas cartoons, it has been remembered well beyond its initial release, being revisited time and time again. The film begins as a story told by Gerda’s grandmother of the Snow Queen and her palace. This story has since been recreated once again to appeal to a larger audience. Based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name published in 1957, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is another cartoon that breaks down the materialistic ideas of Christmas. After the Grinch does his best to ruin Christmas cheer for the Whos’, they show him that the presents and holiday decorations aren’t the most important aspect of a joyous Christmas. This show was originally an animated television special in 1966, but would quickly become a classic. CBS showed it every year during the holidays for twenty years. Later ABC began doing the same.
