Oscar Statuette, Academy Awards

Awards season is upon us, an the grand-daddy of all the awards shows announced their nominees early this morning. At 5:30 am, John Krasinski, Guillermo Del Toro & Ang Lee announced the selected few at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Conspicuous by their absence are any films from Disney and DreamWorks; this years animation nominees show more of a foreign film blend than we have seen in previous years. Overall, Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant was the big winner overall, taking in 11 total nominations. Jennifer Lawrence became the youngest woman- at 24- to garner four Best Actress nominations.

The big nominations, for Best Animated Feature Film, are:

Anomalisa – (Paramount Pictures, Starburns Industries) Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman, Rosa Tran
Inside Out – (Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures) Pete Docter, Jonas Rivera
O Menino E O Mundo [Boy and the World] – (Filme de Papel) Alê Abreu
Omoide no Mânî [When Marnie Was There] – (Studio Ghibli) Yoshiaki Nishimura, Toshio Suzuki, Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Shaun the Sheep Movie – (Aardman Animations) Mark Burton, Richard Starzak

In the Best Animated Short category, the following were favored:

Historia de un Oso (Bear Story) – (Punkrock Animation) Gabriel Osorio, Pato Escala
Prologue – (Animation Masterclass) Richard Williams, Imogen Sutton
Sanjay’s Super Team – (Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures) Sanjay Patel, Nicole Grindle
We Can’t Live without Cosmos – (Independent) Konstantin Bronzit
