The IndieGoGo projects started by ex-Disney animator James Lopez is seeing a ton of interest. Hitting the Internet on August 27, the goal was to just raise $80,000 to fun a short stem-punk inspired short Hullabaloo. They hit that goal in less than a week. Then they steam (punk) rolled over their stretch goal to produce a second short Curse of the Cheshire Cat. This morning word is in that a third short- The Mysterious Island– is now in the works with the project passing a stretch goal of $240,000 raised.

The series will follow the exploits of Veronica Daring, a brilliant young scientist, and anything but a stay-at-home sort of young woman. The first story in the series, Hullabaloo will see our courageous young heroine assume the secret identity of “Hullabaloo”, a goggled crusader who uses wits and science to combat evil and oppose the nefarious conspiracy that has taken her father.

The shorts- and now the series- was started because animator James Lopez has a special love for the traditional, 2D, pencil-in-hand style of the art. And in this ever increasingly digital world, he does not want to see that special art lost or forgotten. According to Lopez, “the film industry has developed the misconception that 2D animation is a dead art form that should be neither preserved nor perpetuated.” The IndieGoGo campaign is to combat that misconception. And so far, it is proving Lopez right…. in spades!

Lopez is hoping to start- well, is now starting, a whole series with his steam-punk inspired characters and world. In addition to the theatrical shorts, he hopes to expand into a TV series, and maybe even a feature film.

The next stretch goal is the $340,000 dollar mark. If they hit that before the IndieGoGo campaign closed on October First (and the trend says they will), there will be a fourth  short titled Ask the Professor.
