Glen Keane’s Animated Poem Duet

Glen Kean, who made a name for himself as the late dean of Disney animators, has released his first new animated short from his association with Google and Motorola. Titled Duet, the film was released last week as part of a special Advanced Technology and Projects session at the Google I/O Conference in San Francisco. It is the third in a series of shorts called the Spotlight Stories that are designed to explore spatial awareness and the sensory inputs of a mobile device to create a distinctive storytelling experience.

Like many of Google’s projects, the goal of the series is to show off the possibilities in what can be done to expand existing technology, in this case, cel phones. Duet is ultimately to be an interactive short, though the short released last week is a stand-alone piece. The first short- Windy Day– was released last October, and the second short- Buggy Night– followed on March 14th of this year. Both are directed by Jan Pinkava and Mark Oftedal.

Glen Keane is a veteran Disney animator, first really came to notice after animated the bear fight in The Fox And The Hound. He really hit his stride as the animator of the lead characters of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin and Beast in Beauty And The Beast. He also animated in Treasure Planet, and was executive producer and one of the driving creative forces behind Tangled. Keane left the Disney Company on March 23, 2012, after 38 years animating for the mouse.
