John Musker, Ron Clement return to direct their fifth animated film with 2018’s Moana. The movie will feature Disney’s first Polynesian princess.
The film title Moana means “water” in Polynesian.
To be animated in the 2D/3D hybrid style similar to Disney’s Paperman. However, Director John Musker adds that, because of production problems with the Meander digital in-betweening system, “it’s far too early to apply the Paperman hybrid technique to a feature.” Instead, the film will employ a new, painterly style of computer color.
In November 2014, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was added to the cast as Maui.
Originally described as a “mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific,” the film will follow the journey of a spirited teenager named Moana as she sails the Pacific Ocean to complete her “ancestor’s quest”.
In October 2014, the release date was moved up from 2018 to “late 2016”.
This will be the 56th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.
