The actress who voices Bart on “The Simpsons” denied Wednesday that she’s trying to sneak the Church of Scientology’s teachings into Illinois classrooms.
Nancy Cartwright, a Scientologist, testified during a House Education Committee hearing at the Illinois State Capitol in — you guessed it — Springfield.
“I am not purporting that the religion of Scientology be taught in schools. There is a misunderstanding here,” Cartwright said during a legislative hearing.
The actress has offered the state a character-education program called “Good Choices,” which she has said is based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s book The Way to Happiness. The program was among the curricula that a House resolution would have encouraged Illinois teachers to use to fulfill a state requirement to teach character education.
Cartwright opened the discussion by speaking in Bart Simpson’s voice to promote her program.
