Sony Updates Animated Feature Film Roster

sony_pictures_animationSony Pictures Digital Productions President Bob Osher has set out more particulars on the studios coming roster of animated films. Updating three and adding a fourth film, Osher said: “I am really excited by the variety of our upcoming projects as well as the amazing talent working on them.” Two of the films in process are sequels to previous Sony projects, and one is a rework of a popular animated character; only one is an original project for the studio.

Live Action Chip ‘n Dale

rescue_rangersDisney is moving ahead with a live-action movie based on the animated series Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers according to the Hollywood Reporter. The original series, which ran 65 episodes in 1989-1990, was produced by Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove. The new movie is to be a hybrid live-action film with animated characters, and will be produced through Mandeville Films.

Frozen And Mr. Hublot Win Gold Man

Frozen_4As expected, Disney’s Frozen won the Best Animated Film Oscar at tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony. The film, which is nearing one billion dollars in total box office, beat out four other films to take the honor. This is The Walt Disney Studio’s first win of the Best Animated Feature award since its introduction in 2002.

Sponsored by ASIFA Hollywood, the awards recognize great works in television, theatrical film and games. This years awards were hosted by voice actor Tom Warburton.

Louis C.K. To Get Illuminated

Barely ten days after announcing a third Despicable Me and a new Dr. Seuss film, Illumination has added another film to their release slate, an as-yet Untitled Pet Movie set for release February 12, 2016.

Maleficent Dream Trailer

MaleficentDisney premiered a new trailer for Maleficent, the live-action adaption of the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty. We see a lot more of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, and it is impressive. The new look at the film was first shown as an ad during Sunday night’s Grammy awards show. The first look trailer was pretty hard to judge the film by; this new trailer seems give a lot better look at what to expect from this new film.

Paperman Director Lands At Paramount

JohnKahrsThe Oscar-winning director of Disney’s  Paperman- John Kahrs- has turned up across the street at Paramount for his next project. Kahrs’ Oscar last year for the Disney animated short was the studios first win in that division in the  since 1969′s It’s Tough To Be A Bird. His new project will be Shedd, a feature film with no release date yet set.

Frozen Wins Best Produced

Frozen_4As it steamrolls it’s way toward February’s Oscars, Frozen wins another award, this one for Producer Peter Del Vecho. The 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards were awarded last night at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. In an non-animated stunner, this years competition featured the first tie for the top film prize in the PGAs’ 25-year history. Live-action films Gravity and 12 Years A Slave shared the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

despicable_me_3Universal announced the release date for the follow up to the Academy-Award nominated Despicable Me 2; Despicable Me 3 will hit theaters on June 30, 2017. No other information for the film, like cast or storyline have been announced. Two other films were announced at thew same time- an original story and a reboot of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

This morning in Hollywood, Chris Hemsworth announced the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards. In the animation world, there are a few surprises, like no nominations for Pixar, either for feature or short. Only five films were considered for Best Animated Feature this year, despite a large field of possible contenders. Best Animated Short features a wide swath of foreign shorts, with only one from the US.
