Superman Renounces US Citizenship

Action Comics 900

Action Comics 900

Probably the best known alien in the United States, Superman will hold a press conference at the United Nations and denounce his US citizenship. After undertaking a journey to walk — not fly — across the United States in the “Grounded” storyline and reconnect with the country and everyday Americans, Superman appears to be taking another step that could have major implications for his national identity: he will announce that he is going to give up his U.S. citizenship in Action Comiocs # 900.

This strange new course is set for the Man if Steel in the short story “The Incident,” written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. It seems that Superman appeares in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime. Since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

Supeman no longer wants to appear as a force for just one country, the United States but rather wants to be seen as a citizen of the World. Thus, he decides to renounce his US citizenship, stating “truth, justice and the American way– it’s not enough anymore.”

How do you feel about Superman taking on the world as his home?
