DreamWorks Partners With YouTube

youtubenationDream­Works car­toon arm Dream­Works Ani­ma­tion has part­nered with web video shar­ing site YouTube for a new daily show for the Inter­net. Titled YouTube Nation, the show is expected to run five min­utes per day, and will high­lights of the best of YouTube pro­gram­ming. YouTube Nation will be co-produced by the two com­pa­nies, with YouTube financ­ing the ven­ture, and is expected to debut next week.

British Acad­emy of Film and Tele­vi­sion Arts (BAFTA)

British Acad­emy of Film and Tele­vi­sion Arts or BAFTA– the British ver­sion of the Acad­emy Awards– has announced their nom­i­nees for the 2014 awards, includ­ing the ani­mated films under con­sid­er­a­tion. Three films are nom­i­nated for both the ani­mated fea­ture com­pe­ti­tion and the ani­mated short cat­e­gory. Pre­vi­ously known as Short Ani­ma­tion, the shorts com­pe­ti­tion has been renamed British Short Ani­ma­tion to play up the UK involve­ment in the films fea­tured. There has been an ongo­ing require­ment that nom­i­nated shorts have sub­stan­tial British con­tri­bu­tion to the pro­duc­tion; the fea­ture nom­i­nees have no such restriction.

Disney Hits The South Pacific in 2018

Disney's MoanaDis­ney has announced an ani­mated fea­ture for 2018– and their newest Princess in the process through the site D55. Moana will fea­ture Moana Waia­liki, Disney’s first hero­ine of Poly­ne­sian extrac­tion. She will be the only daugh­ter of a chief in a long line of navigators.

Miyazaki’s Wind Rises In New York

Kaze TachinuJapan­ese direc­tor Hayao Miyazaki’s new film Kaze Tach­inu (The Wind Rises) has walked away with the New York Film Crit­ics Circle’s award for best ani­mated film of the year. The film is also a nom­i­nee for best ani­mated fea­ture from ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annie Award.

ASIFA-Hollywood has announced the nom­i­na­tions for its 41st annual Annie Awards, the awards that show the best in ani­ma­tion. The Walt Dis­ney Com­pany and GKIDS both have two nom­i­nees for Best Ani­mated Fea­ture (if you count Mizayaki’s Kaze Tach­inu, which Dis­ney dis­trib­utes in the US), with sin­gle entries from Pixar, Uni­ver­sal and Dream­Works Animation.

Frozen Heats Up The Box Office

Frozen_4As the long Thanks­giv­ing hol­i­day week­end winds to a close, Disney’s Frozen is freez­ing out the com­pe­ti­tion. Plac­ing sec­ond for the extended week­end at the box office, both first place The Hunger Games: Catch­ing Fire and Frozen beat the pre­vi­ous Thanks­giv­ing box office record holder, Harry Pot­ter and the Deathly Hal­lows Part 2. Within its own lit­tle world, Frozen blew away every pre­vi­ous record for an ani­mated film open­ing from Dis­ney. The ani­mated musi­cal grossed a gar­gan­tuan $26.9 mil­lion on Fri­day (this after earn­ing $26.3 mil­lion on Wednes­day and Thurs­day). The film will end at about $68 mil­lion over the week­end frame, which would give it about $97 mil­lion after its first five days in wide release.

Second Trailer for Nut Job

nut_job_1Cana­dian and South Korean ani­mated co-production The Nut Job has a new trailer online. Based on Peter Lep­e­ni­o­tis’ 2005 short Surly Squir­rel, this film is Toon­Box Entertainment’s first fea­ture length film. This film has a planned release date for Jan­u­ary 17, 2014, and fea­tures the voices of Will Arnett, Bren­dan Fraser, Kather­ine Heigl and Liam Neeson.

Writer & Director Now In Captain Underpants

Captain UnderpantsDream­Works Ani­ma­tion has attached a direc­tor and a writer to their in-development project Cap­tain Under­pants. Rob Let­ter­man, who also directed Dream­Works’ Shark Tale and Mon­sters vs. Aliens will direct the film, with Nicholas Stoller who penned The Mup­pets writ­ing this film.

BCDB Upgrades To New Forum

BCDB ForumThe Big Car­toon Data­Base announced upgrad­ing their forum to a new soft­ware pack­age this week­end, and the new forum went live Sat­ur­day morn­ing. The upgrade was also accom­pa­nied with a change in URLs, to the new loca­tion http://forums.bcdb.com/. The changeover went over smoothly, with no major glitches accord­ing to BCDB. All of the cur­rent mod­er­a­tors and Admins from the old forum moved over to the new.

Though it hardly seems like it, it is Oscar Time! The Acad­emy of Motion Pic­ture Arts and Sci­ences has announced their short list for the Best Ani­mated Short Film cat­e­gory. This is not the final list, but the final five will come from this list. Canada’s National Film Board leads the pack with three shorts, and Pixar’s The Blue Umbrella did not make the list. It has been a while since a Pixar film has not been in the running.
