On the heels of Warner Bros. hit The Lego Movie, the studio has staking out the release date for two new animated features for Memorial Day weekends in 2017 and 2018. While the studio fell short of tying titles in to the announced dates- and with a variety of films in the pipeline- neither is probably the Lego Movie sequel announce the week the first movie released.
Nickelodeon has released the the first episode of it’s new, web-only series Welcome to the Wayne on Nick.Com today. This weekly online series that follows the adventures of Olly Timbers and Ansi Molina, two ten-year-old boys exploring the crazy, unpredictable world of their New York City apartment building, The Wayne. Welcome to the Wayne is the first of four original, short-form digital-only series rolling out on the newly redesigned Nick.com website and the Nick App this year, with more in development.
From the “you have got to be kidding me” side of San Diego Comic Con comes the announcement of a new series featuring- are you ready for this?- Mike Tyson and his Pigeon Sidekick. To be titled Mike Tyson Mysteries, Iron Mike, his pigeon, the Ghost of the Marquess of Queensbury and Mike’s adopted Korean daughter team up to form the Mike Tyson Mystery Team. One has to wonder if this is some sort of rehab assignment gone bad for Mike’s probation or something…
Even before the much anticipated film hits theaters, Disney has announced a new animated series to be based on “Guardians of the Galaxy“. Guardians of the Galaxy: The Animated Series- as well as a sequel to the theatrical film- were both announced San Diego’s Comic Con. Marvel Animation and Disney XD even went to far as to preview a one-minute teaser of the new animated series at the Comic-Con.
Oscar-Award winning stop-motion animation director Will Vinton has teamed up with Gnosis Moving Pictures to bring four new stop-motion animation projects to the screen soon. This ambitious schedule will be Vinton’s first major projects since Will Vinton Associates was wrestled away from him (and eventually became Laika Entertainment). Vinton is on board to direct and co-write all four projects.
Disney Television Animation has announced development of an animated television special based on the popular Disneyland ride, “The Haunted Mansion.” While no air date is set, Disney did point to some of the artists involved in the project. Look for book illustrator and horror artist Gris Grimly to art direct the film. Joshua Pruett will produce the project, with Grimly and Scott Peterson executive producing. Pruett and Peterson are also joining forces to write the TV special.
The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is pleased to announce the selection of films competing in the Feature Film Category at this year’s Festival running September 17-21. Five films have been announced to be in the competition.

Glen Kean, who made a name for himself as the late dean of Disney animators, has released his first new animated short from his association with Google and Motorola. Titled Duet, the film was released last week as part of a special Advanced Technology and Projects session at the Google I/O Conference in San Francisco. It is the third in a series of shorts called the Spotlight Stories that are designed to explore spatial awareness and the sensory inputs of a mobile device to create a distinctive storytelling experience.
The 38th annual Annecy International Animation Festival wound up June 14th and the winners are now available. The big winner for best feature film – the Cristal- is Alê Abreu’s O Menino e o Mundo (The Boy and the World – Some Dreams Survive). The film is from Brazil and produced by Filme de Papel. The story tells the journey of a village boy into the modern world (São Paulo) as seen through his eyes and imagination, in the search for his father. Suffering from the absence of a father, a boy leaves his village and discovers a fantastic world dominated by animal-machines and strange beings. A portrait of the problems of the modern world seen through the eyes of a child.
Disney Television Animation has announced they have begun production on “Pickle & Peanut,” a buddy-comedy series about two unlikely friends. Scheduled to premiere on Disney XD in fall 2015 premiere, “Pickle & Peanut” will be a hybrid mix of 2-D animation and live-action footage that tell of the adventures of two small-town underdogs who dream up plans to be anything but ordinary. The show’s title characters- an emotional pickle and a freewheeling peanut- are voiced by Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite“) and Johnny Pemberton (“21 Jump Street“), respectively.
