Episode 500 of “The Simpsons” set to air Sunday on Fox. Show creator Matt Groening will celebrate the milestone by donating $500,000 to the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. The money will endow the Matt Groening Chair in Animation, financing visiting master artists to instruct students in the school’s animation program.

Groening will further donate a second installment to the Matt Groening initiative, an annual donation the artist makes to support student filmmakers producing animated shorts with socially responsible themes.

“With this amazing gift, Matt has given our students enormous support and ensured that we will be able to take our program to even greater levels of excellence. Our animation students will benefit greatly from this endowment,” said Teri Schwartz, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

This is a red-letter month for the Simpsons creator. He will receive a star on the Hollywood walk of fame later this month. Groening also created the animated series “Futurama” and wrote the comic strip “Life In Hell.”
