Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets jumped through movie theaters this weekend, topping the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for an original animated film. With a weekend take of $103.17 million for its first three days, Pets surpassed the $90.4 million record made by Pixar’s Inside Out last year. Pets also had the widest opening ever for an animated film, opening in 4,370 theaters this weekend.
After three weeks of swimming through the competition at the box office, Pixar’s animated Finding Dory sank to third place. However, its $20.3 million weekend takes the film to a gross of $422.5 million, making Dory the highest grossing Pixar movie yet. The next Pixar film just might be another sequel, Toy Story 4.

A live-action The Legend of Tarzan came between the two animated films, and earned a solid second place with it’s weekend gross of $20.6 million.

Next up from Chris Meledandri and Illumination Entertainment? Sing, which hits theaters in December.
