Distributor Universal Pictures put all its Easter eggs in one basket over the weekend — and lucked out.
Hop, its animated/live action hybrid release, grossed $38.1 million at its opening to lead the North American box office, Universal estimated Sunday. This tied with the animated feature film Rango for the best movie debut so far this year.
It was greatly above earlier projections by industry analysts, who had thought the movie would debut at around $25 million.
