This morning the nominees for 24 categories of the Academy Awards were announced in Beverly Hills by the president of the Academy Cheryl Boone Issacs, Chris Pine, J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron. Among the surprises was the lack of a nomination for Warner Bros. The Lego Movie, though we are not crying much about that oversight. The rest of the nominations were pretty predictable and in line with what we thought were the front runners, with one each from Disney and DreamWorks. Laika was awarded a nominee, and two dark horses, one from Japan and one from Ireland are all in the running.

The nominees for Best Animated Film are:

Big Hero 6 (Don Hall, Chris Williams and Roy Conli)
The Boxtrolls
(Anthony Stacchi, Graham Annable and Travis Knight)
How to Train Your Dragon 2
(Dean DeBlois and Bonnie Arnold)
Song of the Sea
(Tomm Moore and Paul Young)
Kaguya Hime no Monogatari (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya)
(Isao Takahata and Yoshiaki Nishimura)

The animated shorts series of films are pretty wide ranging. One is a student film from England, and a nomination for Torill Kove of Canada. Marieke Blaauw, Joris Oprins andJob Roggeveen also pull in their first nomination.

The nominees for Best Animated Short are:

The Bigger Picture (Daisy Jacobs and Christopher Hees)
The Dam Keeper
(Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi)
Feast
(Patrick Reed and Kristina Reed)
Me and My Moulton
(Torill Kove)
A Single Life
(Joris Oprins)

The winners of both categories (and the other 22 categories) will be announced at the Dolby Theatre on February 22nd. The ceremony will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and air on ABC-TV.
