British char­ac­ter actor Michael Gough, who por­trayed but­ler Alfred Pen­ny­worth in the first four of Tim Burton’s Bat­man movies, died Thurs­day. He was 94.

Gough came out of retire­ment in 2005 to work for Bur­ton again, voic­ing Elder Gutknecht in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Also for Bur­ton, he voiced the Dodo Bird in last year’s Dis­ney motion-capture film Alice In Won­der­land.

He voiced the Pro­fes­sor in Tony Collingwood’s short film Rarg (1988).

Gough was born to British par­ents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya (now Malaysia) on Novem­ber 23, 1916. First seen on the screen in the 1947 movie Blanche Fury, he gained cult fans for his parts in such Ham­mer Films pro­duc­tions as Drac­ula (1958) and Phan­tom Of The Opera (1962).
