British character actor Michael Gough, who portrayed butler Alfred Pennyworth in the first four of Tim Burton’s Batman movies, died Thursday. He was 94.
Gough came out of retirement in 2005 to work for Burton again, voicing Elder Gutknecht in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Also for Burton, he voiced the Dodo Bird in last year’s Disney motion-capture film Alice In Wonderland.
He voiced the Professor in Tony Collingwood’s short film Rarg (1988).
Gough was born to British parents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya (now Malaysia) on November 23, 1916. First seen on the screen in the 1947 movie Blanche Fury, he gained cult fans for his parts in such Hammer Films productions as Dracula (1958) and Phantom Of The Opera (1962).
