Ten Shorts That Could Be Oscar Material

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences OscarThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences- you know, the Oscar people- have released a short list of the ten short animated films that this years nominees will be drawn from. These ten were taken from fifty-eight shorts originally submitted for consideration. Disney made the list, but Pixar was snubbed for the second year in a row. Bill Plympton returns for a third attempt, ex-Disney animator Glen Keane has a short in the fray, and two students-Daisy Jacobs and Réka Bucsi also have works under consideration.

20 Films Up For Oscar

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences OscarThis year, there looks to be 20 animated films as possible contenders in the race for the Best Animated Film Oscar. The list has no apparent front runner, and no film this year from Pixar. The field is a rounded out with many more foreign films than usual, with entries from France, Ireland, Japan, the U.K. and Latvia. The list induces three films from Disney and from DreamWorks Animation, and one each from Blue Sky and Reel FX Animation.

Big Hero 6

Big Russian Hero Six

big-hero-6Disney Studio’s next animated feature film Big Hero 6 opened a little early in Russia… and bowled the Russians over. After opening to rave reviews at the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 23, 2014, Disney shuttled the film to Russia to take advantage of two weeks of school holidays in Russia in late October. Big Hero 6 brought in 5 million in the first two days, which is considered a very strong open in the Russia. The film opens to US audiences later this week, on November 7th.

The Return of Bobby’s World?

Bobby's WorldComedian Howie Mandel let slip the resurrection of his 90’s animated series Bobby’s World at Comikaze in Los Angeles this weekend. He provided no additional information, such as when and where it will air, who is producing, or even when to expect the new show. Additional queries to Mandel’s reps have also not returned any additional information.

Laikas Boxtrolls Opens Big

boxtrollsLaika Entertainment had it’s biggest open ever this weekend with their new animated stop-motion feature The Boxtrolls. The film came in third place in the United States with an estimated $17.3 million in total weekend box office. The Boxtrolls was up against  The Maze Runner, which barely squeaked ahead in second with $17.5 million. The film also fared well overseas, opening in first and second in the UK and in Mexico.

Fox Animation Takes Home The Emmys

emmy-awardTaking a look at the winners for this year’s Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows Fox as a big winner with Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons voice actor Harry Shearer each won their first Emmy Award. Paul Rudish new take on Mickey Mose also fared well, with the all-Italian ‘O Sole Minnie pulled in two Emmys, for Best Short Format Animated Program and to Narina Sokolova for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Background Designer, and a second episode pulling in an Emmy also for Background Design.

Second Book Of Life Trailer

book_life2Back in June, we raved about the first trailer for Fox’s The Book of Life. Originally developed at DreamWorks, the film moved over to 20th Century and ReelFX in 2012. The film will release to theaters on October 17, 2014. The film is directed by Jorge Gutierrez, with Guillermo del Toro producing. And now we have a new trailer for the film. And while this one is a little more down-to-earth than the first trailer, it has done nothing to keep us from looking forward to seeing this film.

DreamWorks Penguins of Madagascar Has New Trailer

penguins-1DreamWorks’ spin-off feature film The Penguins of Madagascar has a new trailer online. The film will be in theaters November 26, and is directed by Simon Smith. It features the voices of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Knights, Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, Peter Stormare and John Malkovich.
