Der Fuehrer’s Face

Well Happy New Year! We start the year off with an Academy Award winning cartoon featuring Donald Duck from 1943. In fact, Der Fuehrer’s Face is Donald’s ONLY Oscar, to date. As funny as this short is, we should never forget the seriousness behind this and other War films… fighting the Nazi’s was serious business in the early forties, even if it could get a bit funny at times.

This short places Donald as a worker dreaming of freedom during the golden age of Nazi Germany. A German “oom-pah” band parades through town extolling the “virtues” of the Fuehrer with the title song. They awaken Donald Duck, who has to go to work in a Nazi munitions factory, much to his regret.

Luckily in the end, after a frantic workday trying to alternate between making bombs and saluting Hitler, he finds that it has all been a nightmare and that he is still living in the good old U.S.A.

Released on New Year’s Day 1943, this was in fact the only Oscar-winning Donald Duck cartoon.
