The victory was narrow, but “The Smurfs” stayed on top of the foreign box office yet again this past weekend.

Combining 3D animation and live action, The Smurfs grossed $15.6 million at 6,660 venues in 81 overseas countries. It’s the fifth weekend in a row that Sony Animation’s family film has emerged at No. 1 overseas.

The Smurfs reached No. 1 spot in Greece, the only new country where the film was released over the weekend.

Since it first opened abroad July 27, the movie has made $322.2 million.

In a close second place was 20th Century Fox’s live-action series entry Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It collected $13 million from a 5,200 locations in 60 countries.

DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 made $2.26 million this weekend from 6,433 screens in 20 countries. In all, it’s grossed $490.6 million since opening abroad May 26.
