The Smurfs

The vic­tory was nar­row, but “The Smurfs” stayed on top of the for­eign box office yet again this past weekend.

Com­bin­ing 3D ani­ma­tion and live action, The Smurfs grossed $15.6 mil­lion at 6,660 venues in 81 over­seas coun­tries. It’s the fifth week­end in a row that Sony Animation’s fam­ily film has emerged at No. 1 overseas.

The Smurfs reached No. 1 spot in Greece, the only new coun­try where the film was released over the weekend.

Since it first opened abroad July 27, the movie has made $322.2 million.

In a close sec­ond place was 20th Cen­tury Fox’s live-action series entry Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It col­lected $13 mil­lion from a 5,200 loca­tions in 60 countries.

Dream­Works Animation/Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 made $2.26 mil­lion this week­end from 6,433 screens in 20 coun­tries. In all, it’s grossed $490.6 mil­lion since open­ing abroad May 26.
