A veteran of Disney, animator James Lopez has a special love for the traditional, 2D, pencil-in-hand style of the art. And in this ever increasingly digital world, he does not want to see that special art lost or forgotten. To that end, Lopez has started up and IndieGoGo campaign to finance a new, 2D animated short Hullabaloo.
Co-written by Lopez and G. D. Falksen, Hullabaloo is the story of Veronica Daring, a brilliant young scientist who returns home from an elite finishing school to find her father- the eccentric inventor Jonathan Daring- missing without a trace! The only clue left behind points Veronica toward Daring Adventures, an abandoned amusement park used by her father to test his fantastical steam-powered inventions. There she discovers a strange girl named Jules, a fellow inventor who agrees to help Veronica in locating her missing father and discovering the secrets of his work.
The IndieGoGo campaign took off gangbusters, funding the short in less than a week. In fact, funding is so high that they have reached two higher funding levels, one of which confirms the production of a second short to be titled Curse of the Cheshire Cat.
In addition to producing the short in a technique that takes a step back in time, Lopez is also producing in a style that steps back in time- Steam Punk.
Lopez is joined by various other Disney alumni including animators Bruce Smith, Rick Farmiloe, Minkyu Lee, Sandro Cleuzo, and Sarah Airriess in this labor of love. The films music is by Manel Gil-Inglada, an acclaimed composer from Spain who was awarded the Jerry Goldsmith Award for “Best Music in a Full Length Format” in 2010. The short is produced by Evelyn Kriete. Voices are provided by Mary Robinette Kowal, Yuri Lowenthal, and G. D. Falksen.
The film is just a first step, according to James Lopez. If the interest in this short film remains high- and based on the speed of the IndieGoGo, that seems to be a good assumption- Lopez would like to push on to a series of shorts, a feature film, or maybe even a television series.
Here is a short peak at the film, in their promotion video.
