Pixar’s next animated feature film – Inside Out– is due out in one year, and today Pixar announced the short that will accompany the film. The short is titled Lava and is described as a musical love story that takes place over millions of years. Pixar gave LA journalists an early sneak preview last night and by all accounts, the footage shown was stunning. Pixar also showed the new poster for the short, which shows a beautiful, idyllic tropical island, frolicking (and paired!) sea-life, and a background of a smoldering volcano.
The released synopsis just says the story was inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes. This musical love story is directed by James Ford Murphy, a studio veteran who has animated on the company’s films since 1998’s A Bug’s Life. The short is produced by Andrea Warren, also a long-time Pixar veteran.
Also announced was the first in-depth synopsis of the accompanying feature film, Pete Docter’s Inside Out. According to the release, the film will be:
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).
The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
Inside Out is directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronnie del Carmen, and the producer is Jonas Rivera. Both films will hit theatyers- together- on June 19th, 2015.
Finally, here is an advance look at the characters inside the brain of Riley.
