The Iron Giant - A-113 and Trivia in Other Films

We have come to the end of the current Pixar films. No worries, as further films like Inside Out, Finding Dory and The Incredibles 2 come out, we will be updating this page! But we are not yet done with A-113!

As we move forward to other studios, we felt best to start with Brad Bird’s first film, The Iron Giant. He did this film before he joined Pixar, and before his Oscar-winning The Incredibles and Ratatouille. He definitely shows his love for the Easter Eggs though, and to paying an homage to his predecessors.

Our favorite Easter Egg is the two train engineers whose train is stopped by the Giant. These are animated versions of two classic Disney animators, Frank Thomas and Oliver “Ollie” Johnston. Their work in the classic Disney films cannot be overstated- they are two of Disney’s Nine Old Men. Bird showed real class with this homage to two great animators… who also happen to be train aficionados, too.

Bird also brought these two back in 2004 for The Incredibles.

Other Iron Giant Trivia

Peter Cullen, Sean Connery, Frank Welker, and James Earl Jones were considered to voice the role of The Iron Giant, but the role was given to Vin Diesel. Diesel went on to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

When Hogarth shows the Giant his Superman comics, the music playing is from the Max Fleischer Superman (1941) cartoons.

Pete Townshend of the rock band The Who originally developed this story as a musical destine for the stage (as “The Iron Man”). Co-producer Des McAnuff thought it worked better as an animated film, and sold Warner Bros. on the concept.
